Forestry and
Forest Service
The work involves services of forestry specialists, forestry management
experts and forests service officers. Work for forestry specialists in
technical, management and bureaucratic capacities exists in the government
departments of forests, in forests corporations and other bodies, wasteland
development boards, forests-based industries, research institutions,
non-governmental organization (NGOs) and in teaching and in consultancy.
Courses/Training
Forestry can be taken up for academic study in the form of a bachelor’s degree
programme (B.Sc Forestry) 3 or 4 yr degree course at dozen universities in the
country. The minimum qualification required to join the B.Sc (Forestry) course
is a pass in plus two or equivalent examination with science (physics,chemistry,biology)
or agriculture as the group of subjects.

Indian Forest Service (IFS)
The IFS is an All –India service offering a combination of field work and desk
job. Eligibility to join the IFS is a Bachelor’s Degree with at least one of the
subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry,
Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology or Bachelor’s degree in
Agriculture, Forestry or in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
Initially there is a written examination consisting of the following papers :
Paper I on General English carrying a total of 300 marks
Paper II on General Knowledge with a total of 300 marks
Optional Subject 1 has two papers- Paper III of 200 marks and Paper IV of 200
marks
Optional Subject 2 has two papers – Paper V and Paper VI each of 200 marks
The optional
subject choices are Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry &
Veterinary Science, Botany Chemistry, Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering.
Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics,
Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Statistics and Zoology. The Union Public
Service Commission (UPSC) announces the IFS examination schedule in the
Employment New Weekly and details are available on the UPSC website :
